Sedbergh School bounced back from an opening Pool game defeat to lift the Ampleforth 7s yesterday, the first leg of the HMC North Super Schools 7s series.

12-7 they fell to RGS Newcastle in that first match, but responded with wins against QEGS Wakefield (43-7) and Durham (40-19), before winning their quarter-final against Barnard Castle (36-12), their semi-final against St.Peter’s York (45-20), and winning the final comprehensively against Kirkham Grammar (33-17) with Alistair Crossdale and Richard Addison both scoring twice and Michael Lavery scoring once.

Sedbergh captain Freddie Renwick said:“After the disappointing start to the tournament, it was great to see that we got better and better throughout the day and put some really good performance in against some strong sides.

“It was a great start to the 7s season and we are looking ahead to the our next tournament.”

Elsewhere, RGS Newcastle beat neighbours Durham School 26-19 to win the plate.

Oundle Resist Late Lymm Surge To Reach Cup Semi

Oundle School resisted a second half revival from Lymm High School to win their NatWest Schools Cup Quarter-final 21-12 today and reach a Semi-Final for the first time.

As the touchlines swelled with Oundle supporters filled with anticipation, and the marching band drumming up the atmosphere, some of the Lymm camp quipped that “It’s like a Premiership game here”.

But it was Oundle who played to a beat and a rhythm in the opening exchanges, dictating the tempo, and showing the calmness and precision of a Premiership side.

Lymm came with a game plan to run the ball on every opportunity sensing superiority out wide, but too often they ran down dead ends, coughing up the ball back to a snarling Oundle pack spearheaded by their powerful back row trio of Ben Curry, Tom Curry and captain Francis Cundell.

But for all their early possession and territory Oundle struggled to breakdown a stubborn Lymm defence, and had to settle for two Angus McRae penalties.

Oundle v Lymm 2

But the home side continued to turn the screw, and something had to give – a yellow card to Lymm allowing them more space, and after a tiring number of phases Oundle centre Toby Warner stretched over to lift the home crowd who might have wondered when that try was going to come.

Oundle continued to control the play, their catch and drive game was effective, but small handling errors prevented them from really driving home that advantage.

Lymm eventually worked their way into the Oundle twenty-two and were awarded with a threatening penalty in the corner on the final play, but a knock on brought the opportunity to a halt.

An almost perfect half for Oundle, and ‘more of the same’ made up the bulk of the murmurings from the Oundle camp gathered under the posts as the half time whistle shrilled.

More of the same was exactly what the Oundle players delivered in the second half, continuing to suffocate their opponents up front.

What looked like a potentially match winning score came early in the second half, when an eight man maul turned into an unstoppable 15 man maul, with Tom Curry snuggling at the bottom of it all over the line.

But Lymm fought back, their forwards found an abrasive edge, and talented half back Alex Mitchell and Mark Dixon had Oundle in a spin with their elusive running.

Oundle v Lymm 3

It was another a maul which gave the visitors a sniff – hooker Rob Makin the scorer.

It was now Lymm who were dominating possession and territory, driving through the middle, then shifting the ball from one side of the pitch to the other.

It was lung busting and draining, and when the home side’s defence fatigued, Dixon exploited a gap to score Lymm’s second and bring them to within one score.

An anxious finale lay in store, but Oundle responded positively and attacked their opponents with the intensity they demonstrated in the first half.

Warner came close to scoring his second, only to be held up over the line, but the damage had been done, Oundle had won a penalty and McRae put them two scores ahead.

With that cushion, and with the clock ticking, it was just a case of holding on. Lymm continued to attack, keeping the ball away from contact with their offloading game, and could have scored again had it not have been for a loose final pass.

But the clock did its job and Oundle will now meet Bromsgrove at Allianz Park, one game from a trip to HQ.

Oundle’s Head of Rugby John Olver commented:“We played as well as we could have done in the first half, but massive credit to Lymm they played with real character in the second half, and probably didn’t play to their straps in the first half.

“It was a great advert for schools rugby.

“We don’t teach the boys anything we didn’t learn in our playing days, it’s all about looking after the ball and giving them a good outing up front!”

Lymm High School Head Coach Lee Pickles added:“It was tough because we thought we had the beating of them out wide in the backs, but we probably weren’t doing it in the right areas, and should have looked for more control until at least the half way line before we looked to play.

“It was the second time this lot got to a quarter-final, we need to look for a combination to get past that!

” These lads are a brilliant bunch, from 1-15 they work and train so hard.”

There were cup wins for Oundle, Bromsgrove and Dulwich, whilst in the Vase, SEEVIC, Stockport Grammar, King Edward VI Aston and Churchers College all came away with wins after this weeks NatWest Schools Cup Quarter-Final action.

OUNDLE reached their first NatWest Schools Cup Under 18s semi-final helped by the support of the school band amid a big crowd.

MATCH REPORT- OUNDLE V LYMM HIGH >>

The Northamptonshire school responded by making a quick start which helped them to a 21-12 success over Lymm HS.

Oundle led 18-0 at one stage thanks to tries from Toby Warner and Tom Curry backed up by the goal kicking of Angus McRae.

Though Lymm fought back, grabbing tries by Rob Makin and Mark Dixon, a late penalty from McRae eased home nerves.Oundle v Lymm 3

Oundle will face Midland rivals Bromsgrove in the semi-final at Saracens’ Allianz Park on March 7.

Bromsgrove also reached a first senior semi-final by defeating Dauntsey’s, from Devizes in Wiltshire, 44-12.

Dauntsey’s led 17-15 at the break only to be swept aside by Bromsgrove who collected six tries in all, two from hooker Henry Walker and centre Jase Edwards plus one each from fly half Lee White and flanker Harry Lloyd-Jones.

The tightest quarter-final of the three played this week saw champions Dulwich topple Hampton 8-7.

Dulwich kept on course for a fourth successive final appearance only through a late drop goal from Jonny Waugh.Dulwich v Hampton

The fly half landed the kick from the left-hand side of the Hampton 22 to settle another outstanding match between old rivals.

Hampton had led 7-5 thanks to a penalty try which cancelled out an effort from Omar Malik for Dulwich who have won three finals in a row.

There was plenty of drama in the Under 18 Vase quarter-finals as well. Another last-gasp effort propelled King Edward VI, Aston, to a 12-10 win over West Buckland from Devon.IMG_8936

A try by wing Warren Davis after sustained pressure settled the contest following an early score from No 8 Alex Bennett.

The Birmingham school will face Churcher’s College from Petersfield for a place in the final. The Hampshire team defeated Cheadle Hulme 25-21, captain Seb Herold kicking 20 points.churchers rugby

In the other Vase semi-final, Stockport GS, who beat Welbeck Defence 6th Form College, 32-15, will meet Seevic College, from Benfleet in Essex, who overcame St George’s of Weybridge, 30-19.

Old School Coach Hails ‘Rare’ English Talent Joseph

Millfield School Head of Rugby John Mallet says rising England star Jonathan Joseph is a rare talent, and is unsurprised by his recent exploits for both Bath and England.

The former England and Bath prop Mallet coached Joseph for two years at the Somerset school (2007-2009), and admits Joseph is the sort of player who takes time to settle into environments, which might explain why he fell out of England’s reckoning for a couple of seasons.

He told In At The Side:“He joined us when he was 16 and actually had quite a quiet year in his first year as he was coming to grips with the school and rugby.

“He really took off in the 7s season of the lower 6th year, and by upper 6th he was just an outstanding player, the 7s programme seemed to spur him on

“I think as we’ve seen since he left the school too, he’s needed time to settle into environments. It took him a year or so before he settled at London Irish and shown what he’s really capable of.

“I think his journey with England has been quite fascinating in that he got his chance, then was left out of the squad for a while, so he went away and evaluated from a distance and came back believing that his way is the right way to play.”

Joseph has awed the England public with his performances for his club recently, and had people purring with his performance against Wales in Cardiff last week, his footwork dazzling the Millennium Stadium.

Mallet highlights his desire to play with ambition as what makes him a rare English talent, but also thinks Joseph doesn’t receive the credit he should for other areas of his game.

“Everywhere he’s been now he’s stood out for that desire to play with ambition and I think that is a rareity in current Premiership backlines,” said Mallet

“I think he also showed last Friday that people are wrong to write off other areas of his game – his defence is not weak, his kicking game is good and he’s fantastic in the air – he caught a couple well on Friday and they attacked off it.”

Joseph’s ability in the air lights a fuse in Mallet’s memory bank as he recalls the centre’s aerial exhibition at the 2008 St.Joseph’s College National Schools Festival where Joseph won the player of the tournament award.Screen Shot 2015-02-13 at 16.41.08

“I can remember at The St. Joseph’s Festival in his final year at Millfield where we kicked all of our restarts down the middle and JJ caught pretty much all of them, I think the other teams were sick of it by the end.”

Joseph wasn’t the only star of that 2008/2009 Millfield side. Also in that team were nine other players who have gone on to play rugby professionally including Mako Vunipola (Saracens & England), Rhys Ruddock (Leinster and Ireland), Henry Thomas (Bath and England), Chris Cook (Bath), Olly Lindsay-Hague (Harlequins), Dante Mama (London Welsh), Marco Mama (Bristol),  Miles Mantella (London Scottish) and Ben Mosses (Bristol), as well as several other schoolboy internationals.

When that once in generation side is brought up, Mallet sighs at the fact that they even lost at all, he laughed:” It was probably our (the coaches) fault that they lost at all!

“There was one in particular against Sedbergh, where I left a couple of guys on the bench including JJ who we brought off the bench, but it ended up being too late.

“They were a pleasure to coach, and at the end of that season John Brimacombe and I reflected and thought that we wouldn’t see a side like that again.

“But it’s amazing that we’ve continued to work with some special sides and special player in the years since that.

“We always tried to take an unstructured approach at the school allowing the boys to make decisions and learn for themselves. And I think that helped players like JJ.”

Report on the Durham 7s at Kingston Park yesterday.

Sunday 1st March saw the first of this season’s Durham School seven’s tournaments. Hosted at Durham School was the U15 Archer sevens, named after England legend and old boy Garath Archer. The U18 Bain sevens was hosted by Newcastle Falcons after long standing Durham School supporter Adrian Bain.

U18s:

The Durham School Bain 7s was as big as it has ever been this year with 20 sides travelling to participate. With a number of big hitters in the competition anything could happen, especially in some challenging conditions. Four groups of five saw the top two teams qualify for the plate and cup competition respectively.

There were some close games in the group stages with Bradford Grammar School, Sedbergh, Kirkham Grammar School and Merchiston Castle all qualifying top in the groups. RGS, Newcastle, Pocklington, Hymers College and Woodhouse Grove, went through as runners up into the plate.

The semi-finals and finals were played on the Falcons 1st team pitch at Kingston Park which was a fantastic opportunity for the players and made perfect conditions for great sevens rugby. With two excellent finals, Woodhouse Grove beat RGS, Newcastle 22 – 19 to claim the plate. The cup final saw Sedbergh beat Kirkham 19 – 12 in the second cup final between the two sides already this term having also won two weeks ago at Ampleforth College. Ali Crossdale scored twice and Jonny McPhillips scored the other for The Brown. James Maddrell scored twice for Kirkham.

Sedbergh are currently leading the U18 section of the Super Sevens, the results of which can be followed at Schools Sport. The Super Sevens series was created two years ago and features the North East HMC Independent schools. The result from each schools U14, U15, U16 and U18 sevens sides at every Super Sevens tournament are collated to produce an end of season champion at each age group but also an overall Super Sevens champion school. The overall championship was won in 2013 by Durham School and in 2014 by Sedbergh School. Currently, the age groups competition leads are as follows:

U18: Sedbergh lead after two tournaments

U16: St Peter’s, York lead after one tournament

U15: Durham School lead after three tournaments

U14: RGS, Newcastle lead after two tournaments

The strength in depth of the Wellington College squad was evident as they comfortably saw off the challenges of Epsom College and Brighton College in the latter stages of this tournament, despite being without regular team members Matt Williams and Sam Trowbridge.

The Pool matches went very much according to seeding, with the closest contests coming in Pool B, where RGS Guildford came back from a 12 point deficit to edge Whitgift 15-12, and especially in Pool B, which looked as if it might come down to points difference, with Cranbrook potentially heading for a QF place in the main competition, with a 12 point lead at half time over Hampton, only to concede 19 unanswered second half points.

Wellington (vs RGS Guildford) and Tonbridge (vs Filton) won their QF games convincingly, but Epsom and Brighton were given close games by John Fisher and Hampton respectively. This left Wellington to meet Epsom on pitch 1 with Brighton facing Tonbridge on pitch 2 in the semi-finals.

It was going to take something special to disrupt the hitherto untroubled flow of the Wellington side. Might Epsom’s physicality be enough? The Surrey school probably needed to exert some early pressure, but it was Wellington who scored first, Sam Aspland-Robinson going in under the posts. Successive penalties saw Epsom get into the Wellington 22, but possession was lost and Conor Dolan broke clear to extend the lead to 14-0, and a Tom Parton try made it 19-0 at half time. With a second Dolan score soon after the interval, Wellington were able to go to their bench early before Epsom finally got on the scoreboard with a try from Peter O’Brien. Normal service was resumed before the end, Oliver Parsons completing the scoring to leave Wellington convincing winners, 31-7.

A much closer semi-final was being played on the neighbouring pitch. Brighton took an early lead with tries from the two Marcus’s, Ramage and Smith, but Tonbridge narrowed the deficit to 12-5 before the interval, Joe Froud forcing his way over. Tonbridge’s revival continued in the second half through a Ben Earl try. With the conversion good, it was game on at 12-12, before a piece of individual brilliance from Quins Academy player Loewy Simmons provided the decisive score to give the Sussex school a 19-12 win. (Image credit below – Scrumpix)

922 RGS Charity 7s

After Whitgift had taken the Plate final 12-0 over a Dulwich side that played some useful Sevens, despite none of the NatWest Cup Semi-final team being available, Wellington and Brighton took the field on pitch 1. The first few minutes followed a similar pattern to Wellington’s semi-final win, with Aspland-Robinson opening the scoring. The Brighton defence stood firm though and won possession, enabling the long-striding Kyran Bungaroo to break into the Wellington 22, only an ankle tap tackle by the last defender preventing a try. However a turnover saw Wellington break out and a Dolan offload put Parton clear to increase the lead to 14-0.

Another break by Bungaroo took play back into the Wellington 22 and a penalty to Brighton saw Simmons close to scoring, but the ball went loose and Will Wilson seized the chance to go the length of the pitch to score under the posts. The Wellington captain had evidently given everything to outpace the cover defence and he was unsuccessful with the conversion attempt, but a 19-0 lead for Wellington at the interval looked decisive.

Again the game was sealed with a Dolan try early in the second half, but with the Wellington bench on Brighton continued to press for a score. Simmons again showed his pace with a break into the Wellington half and Bungaroo broke down the right touchline before offloading to Alastair Sparling who scored under the posts. There was just time for a final Wellington score, replacement scrum half taking the final score to 31-5.

The Referee squad (with Harlequins scrum half Karl Dickson refereeing the final) voted Will Wilson as Player of the Boys’ Tournament. Wellington will no doubt start among the favourites for both the Surrey and Rosslyn Park Sevens. Brighton will hope to have available for those competitions the outstandingly fast Toby Harries, away on this occasion in Sheffield where he not only won U17 200m gold in the England Athletics Indoor Championships but also broke the 17 year old UK age group record.

This event (with Great Ormond Street Hospital one of the charities benefitting) is fast becoming one of the premier schools Sevens tournaments in the South of England. With Worthing College causing something of an upset to beat Filton in the Girls’ Final and Royal Hospital School and Portsmouth Grammar School taking the Shield and Bowl competitions, the format allows all sides to progress beyond the Pool stages. With a number of grounds in the South struggling with the effects of recent rain, the Hartswood ground staff are to be commended on the overall quality of the playing surfaces.

Millfield School gave the greatest indication of their sevens prowess so far this season after they won the Marches 7s at Hereford Cathedral School yesterday.

One of the toughest competitions on the schools 7s circuit, Millfield had to overcome some top sides en route to their 4th win in this tournament in ten years.

They came through their group with wins against Adams Grammar (38-0), KE VI Stratford (30-0), and Pate’s Grammar (22-12).

They then overcame Welsh sevens giants Llandovery College in their Quarter-final with a 26-7 win, before beating AASE Champions Hartpury College 29-14 in the semi-final.

Tries from Darren Atkins, Harry Close, Josh Bayliss,Matt Dodds and a penalty try helped them to a 35-0 final win against Worth School in the final, with Josh Bayliss picking up the  player of the tournament award.

Millfield’s Adam Hastings reflected on the win:“It was another gutsy and clinical performance from the boys in poor conditions.

“We’ve had a nice run of tournaments but we know we need to stay grounded as we still have things to work on. This team is continuing to grow and I’m very excited for the upcoming tournaments.”

Millfield’s opponents in the final Worth School enjoyed a day to remember. Group wins against 2013 winners King’s Worcester (12-7) and Old Swinford Hospital (7-5) were followed with a Quarter-final win against hosts Hereford Cathedral, and a semi-final win against Cheltenham College (26-5).

An incredible effort from the small Sussex school who produced England 7s captain Tom Mitchell.

Elsewhere, Old Swinford Hospital won the Bowl, whilst Blundell’s School won the Plate.

Brighton College 1st XV player Toby Harries broke the national indoor 200m u17 record by running a time of 21.46 seconds at the England Athletics Championships in Sheffield yesterday.

A remarkable result for Harries, who is only able to train a few times a week for Athletics due to rugby commitments.

Harries is a member of the Harlequins Academy and has been named in the London and South East u16 squad this season.

Head of Rugby at Brighton College Nick Buoy told In At The Side:“He joined the school in fourth form and was IAPS champion, but what’s frightening is that he still hasn’t done that much Athletics training.

“Sally Gunnell comes into train with him from time to time, and he somehow manages to fit that in along with his rugby, and academics – he is very strong academically!

“His pace is obviously very effective in rugby, but what’s unusual about him that you don’t always find with sprinters in rugby is that he’s a hard, resilient player too.

“He’s been one of the top try scorers for the first team this year, and I suspect he’ll be even more effective with sevens. Sevens could be a real option option for him if rugby or Athletics doesn’t work out for him.”

Sherborne School stood out from the West Country crowd to pick up the Colston’s 7s title yesterday.

The Dorset school came through their Group with wins against King’s Bruton (38-5) and Millfield 2’s (29-24), before beating hosts Colston’s 14-12 in the semi-final to set up a final with Kingswood School.

Kingswood arrived in the final after group wins against Bristol Grammar (32-10) and King’s College Taunton (27-12), before beating Welsh school Whitchurch High School 35-0 in the semi-final.

In the final, Fergus Hamilton scored twice along with a try for Zak Smith, with two of Sherborne’s tries coming from driven lineouts.

Rather unconventional for sevens, but smart in the appalling conditions.

Elsewhere, Bromsgrove won the Plate, Milflield 2’s won the Shield, and King’s Bruton won the Bowl.

AASE League Quarter-final’s Preview

It’s the AASE League Quarter-final’s this week with Oaklands, Filton, Truro and Myerscough competing for a semi-final spot in the Cup and Moulton, Henley, Ivybridge and Worcester battling for a Semi-final spot in the Plate.

In Hertfordshire, 2013 Finalists and 2014 Semi-Finalists Oaklands College, who finished second in the Northern League this season, welcome Filton College and Oaklands Head of Rugby Dave Hesketh knows his side will have to be weary of the physical threat posed by Filton.

AASE Festival 9

He said:“We know they will bring a very physical game and have players capable of moving the ball around when necessary. We know they have a strong pack and like to play off the back of that – we’re expecting a real battle up front with some expansive rugby, weather permitting.

“Obviously home advantage is helpful, but I have no doubt both teams will have prepared well and will be highly motivated to progress through to the Semi-Finals. I’m sure the game will be won by the team who is able to build the best platform and the pitch isn’t going to help one team achieve this over the other.”

Filton’s Head of Rugby Saul Nelson echoed similar sentiments:“The boys identified what it is they wanted to work on and that’s exactly what we have been doing. We had a very good warm up game against Henley College last week and I was exceptionally pleased with how the boys performed in both attack and defence.

“I’m not sure what to really expect from Oaklands but I do know that they will be a tough team to beat, especially on their own patch.

“We haven’t really spoken too much about Oaklands as I wanted the boys to concentrate fully on their own game and not get bogged down in what to expect from Oaklands.

“I am sure that the game is going to be a cracker and a fantastic advert for AASE rugby and everything it stand for.”

The other Cup Semi-final sees Truro College welcome Myercough College to Cornwall, a monster away journey for Myerscough, but Manager Steve Gough says it’s a challenge they’re looking forward to, and that is side will have a few surprises for the Truro boys.

He said:“The boys are in good spirits and looks forward to the trip to Truro. It’s going to be a long two days, but it’s a challenge the boys are happy to take on.

“We’ve had a lot of rugby in this period, with students either playing for academy U18s or other representative trials. Three of the boys playing for England sides, whilst others have been playing in local tournaments such as the British colleges league and our U17s playing in a tough U18s county competition so we are match ready.

“I fully expect Truro to be in the same boat really and will be relishing a home tie with us having travelled such a great distance.

“I’m also expecting quite a confident reception having done so well in the south league. We have a few surprises up our sleeve and would suggest that you don’t write us off just yet. We want another go at Hartpury.”

Meanwhile, Truro College Head Coach Marek Churcher believes that the strength of the Southern League this year should stand his side in good stead:“Obviously it’s hard to measure the results of the two leagues, but I think the Southern League has been stronger than ever this year, there have been no easy games and that’s been a good learning curve for the boys.Henley v Truro 5

“Obviously being at home is a big advantage, but they’re travelling down on the Tuesday and they’ve had some good results this season.”

In the Plate , Henley College host Worcester Sixth Form College, and Henley’s Head Coach Danny Batty is pleased he can finally enjoy the luxury of a near full strength squad after deep injury problems earlier in the season.

He said: “Yes we’re in a much better place now with injuries. We’ve got a few niggles but I’ve got pretty much a full squad to pick from for Wednesdays game

“We’ve kept very busy in January & February. We had ten players in the Wasps U18 Academy Squad but have used that period (Academy League) to give other players opportunities. We’ve played friendlies against Oaklands, Brighton College, St Benedicts, Hartpury and Filton so the squad are all up to speed.”AASE Festival 1

Worcester’s AASE Manager Ryan Watkins hopes his side can finally find some consistency at the business end of the season:“We have had a couple of games leading up to this and we have performed well.

“The biggest thing for us is finding some consistency to what we do. The lads haven’t done anything out of the ordinary to keep fit, just old fashioned hard work in training.”

Similarly to Henley, Ivybridge Community College endured a torrid start to the season with injuries, and Head of Rugby Bob Crooks believes this is probably the first time in a long time that he’s been able to count on a fully fit squad.St.Paul's v Ivyrbridge 1

He said: “Everyone is really excited about this game, as it’s the first time we’ve had a full strength squad since October.

“Our problem is that we have a thin squad squad, so when we get injuries to key players like we have done, it’s difficult to replace them.

“We’ve had a couple of dodgy seasons, but I feel that doesn’t reflect the quality in this side.”

Equally, Moulton’s Head of Rugby Jon Phillips feels he can put out his strongest side tomorrow: “We’ve had a few knocks, and we have a few boys playing for Northampton Saints u17s against The Lambs on Tuesday night which has caused a few logistical problems, but we’ll put out our best possible side.

“Our program is not just about results, it’s about enjoyment and performance, so we’ll continue to look to throw the ball around .”
